Dental Exams and Teeth Cleaning for Children

Our goal as a dentist for kids is to work with our young patients to prevent dental diseases and help them maintain good oral health, which is why we place a lot of importance on routine dental exams and cleanings. Along with the American Association of Dentistry, we recommend that children have a dental exam and cleaning every six months. A dental exam involves thoroughly evaluating a child’s mouth for cavities, gum disease and any other potential problem. 

We understand that the first dental visits for kids can be a bit scary and intimidating. That’s why we’ll work with parents to make visits as comfortable as possible for our young patients. Dental X-Rays

Dental X-rays are an important diagnostic tool that can help detect dental problems early, before they become more serious. Using state-of-the-art digital technology, we use low-radiation technology to take dental X-rays. Dental Sealants

Tooth decay is a very serious and worldwide problem in children today. Our family dentist has found that one of the best ways to combat tooth decay is to use dental sealants. Dental sealants are a clear coating that’s applied to the surfaces of your child’s permanent molars to reduce the risk of tooth decay. The sealants prevent plaque and food from accumulating in the deep pits and grooves of these molars, since these areas have a higher risk of cavity formation. Depending on the unique needs and risks your child has, dental sealants may be applied when the first permanent molar is in place, which usually occurs around age 6.

Of course, while dental sealants help reduce the risk of tooth decay in kids, it won’t prevent cavities from forming on other tooth surfaces. For this reason, we instruct children on good dental hygiene and recommend that you make sure your child sees the dentist every six months. Along with good brushing and flossing habits, we advise that your child also use a fluoride toothpaste for even more cavity protection.

Dental Crowns and Bridgework

When a child’s cavity is small, our pediatric dentist here in Cary, NC can repair the tooth with a simple filling. But if the tooth is significantly damaged by decay, there may not be sufficient tooth structure remaining to support a filling. In these situations, a crown can save the child’s natural tooth.

A crown is used to cover a tooth’s surface after decay has been removed. It protects and strengthens the tooth while restoring it to its original shape, size and function. Like our adult patients, there are different types of dental crowns available for kids, from stainless steel to porcelain. Our team will work with you to determine which dental crown is right for your child’s needs. In many cases, we can place a crown in one, easy appointment.

Although it is rare for a child to need bridgework, dental bridges can be helpful if your child is missing one or more adult teeth. Bridges help restore a child’s natural smile and prevent tooth loss issues — such as speech, chewing and bite difficulties. They span the space where the teeth are missing and are bonded to the natural, surrounding teeth for support. If your child is a candidate for bridgework, we will discuss the different types of bridges available and which one would be most beneficial for your child.

Tooth Extractions

Occasionally, a child may need to have a tooth extracted. This occurs when a tooth is severely decayed or damaged, if baby teeth are crowding adult teeth or to prepare your child’s mouth for orthodontic treatment.

Whether your child is having baby teeth or permanent teeth removed, your child’s comfort is our top priority. At the time of extraction, our children’s dentist will numb the affected tooth and surrounding gum tissue with a local anesthetic to prevent your child from feeling pain. We will then loosen the tooth and gently remove the tooth from the socket. Gauze is then placed into the empty socket to control bleeding and prevent clots. Following the extraction procedure, our team will provide post-care instructions for patients and parents. Most children heal very quickly and can resume normal activities within a few days.
