Periodontal Treatment

Treatment for periodontal disease will depend on how far the condition has progressed. We will meet with you to discuss treatment options based on the severity of your infection. In its mildest form, also called gingivitis, gum disease can be reversed with a professional cleaning and proper at-home care. For more advanced cases of gum disease, however, more in-depth periodontal treatment will be needed. To restore gum health, treatment may include:

• Deep cleaning. A deep cleaning procedure called scaling and root planing is recommended for gum disease to prevent the condition from becoming more severe. During the procedure, Dr. Vaghani will remove lingering plaque on the teeth (scaling) and gently smooth the tooth-root surfaces where harmful bacteria collect (planing).
• Bone grafting. Following advanced periodontal disease, a patient’s bone supporting the teeth may be damaged or destroyed. In this case, a procedure known as bone grafting can be used to reverse the damage by rebuilding lost bone and tissue. During this surgical procedure, disease-causing bacteria is removed from the gum tissue. Bone grafting material is then added and eventually absorbed by the body to regenerate the lost bone.

• Crown lengthening. It is not uncommon for teeth to be severely damaged due to gum disease.
